Turn around.
I heard a nudge in my heart to turn around. I was driving home in the middle of the night after a violent storm had swept through the area. After cresting a hill, I’d nearly run into a large branch in the road. I swerved just in time to miss it. Turn around and move that branch. Ugh. I did not want to go back. It was after 3 am. I was so tired that the lines in the road swam before my eyes. All I wanted was my pillow. Then I remembered a story my pastor shared about a time when the Holy Spirit had led him to turn around late one night. He had found an empty car on the side of the road where the driver had been ejected from her seat into the nearby woods. He called 911, and the woman received medical treatment. Maybe I should move that branch. Turn around! I turned around. I parked along the roadside near the fallen tree. My heart raced as I ran to lug the branch out of the way. I worried that if anyone passed, they’d hit me because it so dark. My exhaustion level was too high for this type of excitement. When I drove off, I felt peace for obeying the Holy Spirit’s prompting. In my rear view window, I saw another car driving down the part of the road where I’d just been. It warmed my heart to know the path was clear. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (NKJV). I believe God prepared beforehand for me to turn around and move that branch. Honestly, it wasn’t very glamorous, but I obeyed. God desires to use His children for His glory and has individual assignments for each of us. However, too often I miss those opportunities by refusing to listen. What if I had decided I was too sleepy and kept driving home? Maybe if I hadn’t moved that tree, the person behind me would have gotten into an accident. I’ll never know. I had to be ready to listen to the Holy Spirit, even when it seemed inconvenient. Psalm 25:14a says, "The Lord confides in those who fear Him” (NIV). The God of the universe shares His secrets with those who fear Him. When He knows that our ears are open to hearing His whispers, His Holy Spirit calls us. We just have to be willing to hear and obey. I also realized that my heart was softened to hear the Holy Spirit ask me to do something random like turn around in the middle of the night because my pastor had shared a similar story. This enhances my understanding of verses like Psalm 9:1, “I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works” (NKJV). When God does something good in and through us, we need to boast of what He has done. We share our stories because they give God glory. They also encourage others to be obedient when their times come. God also reminded me about how well He protects us. Psalm 121:8 says, “The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore" (NKJV). I wondered how many times God had cleared my roads, physical or otherwise, without my knowledge. Some people ask why God doesn't prevent bad things from happening. I suspect He stops way more things than our minds could begin to conceive, we just don't know. By listening to the Holy Spirit, God used me as an instrument for salvation that night. I pray we tune our ears to listen to the Holy Spirit, obey His prompting, and sing His praises to everyone we meet.

I always struggle with not knowing whether it was the Holy Spirit nudging me or my own thoughts. I guess it’s better to act on it just in case! Who knows what life you saved?

I think sometimes I want to think it is just my thoughts, because those are easier to shrug off than words from the Holy Spirit. I agree it is better to act just in case because God will at least honor our desire to obey.

You made a deposit in your Spiritual Retirement Account (SRA) my friend. No better return on investment than when you invest in eternity. Good on you young lady for heeding the Holy Spirit's call. Am so proud of you my friend.

I like the idea of a Spiritual Retirement Account. I've never thought of it like that before. The closest I've heard is that you can't take it with you, but you can send it on ahead. The eternal perspective helps.

Thank you for this post. I think God will use us for more than we can imagine in the Kingdom if we put obedience above outcome. As you said, you'll never know exactly why God wanted you to move that branch, but it's enough to know he used according to His will. I recently felt that nudge when I saw a truck broken down on the side of the road on my way home from church. I heard that same "Turn Around." I didn't want to because I know nothing about cars... but I obeyed. I went back and said, "I know nothing about cars, but do you need a ride or a cell phone?" The driver said, "No. I've got someone coming, but it means a lot that you turned around. Do you know how many people have driven by leaving church?" OUCH. That was sobering.

Thanks for sharing that story. It will help me be more willing to stop even though I too know nothing about cars. Sometimes, even for car repairs, moral support counts!

One time in particular, I remember the nudge so strong that I couldn't ignore it anymore. For months I had avoided a gas station-more because when I went inside to pay (yes this was awhile ago when my kids were little), they had THOSE magazines that we at my kids' eye level and didn't have the metal plate covers. I would drive by there all the time and feel the nudge to go in and say something (times when my kids weren't with me). I always had an excuse...in a hurry...frozen food in the trunk, etc.

Thank you for sharing that story. I love how God hounds us sometimes until we obey. He knows that when we do, we will be blessed more than we can imagine. Go God!

Thank you for the reminder to heed the Holy Spirit. I know that I can get so busy with "life," that if I'm not careful, the noise of things around me masks what the Holy Spirit might be trying to say to me.

One of my biggest problems is rushing so much that I drown out the Holy Spirit's voice. God is trying to slow me down so I can hear His voice.

Thank you Joanna. I love to hear stories like these. God is so good to give us His Holy Spirit who not only cares for us but people we don't know. Your comment, "I suspect He stops way more things than our minds could begin to conceive, we just don't know" is right on.

Wow - thanks for sharing your story. God really does protect us from so much harm. Sometimes waiting is the safest course of action. I connected waiting with being an action. We have to actively restrain ourselves sometimes and hold back when we want to go. God uses that wait to realign us to His timing for our safety and His glory.

Beautiful story and a wonderful reminder for us to listen to the voice (nudging) of the Holy Spirit. Usually, my reminder is that quiet voice in my head reminding me NOT to say what I'm thinking or NOT to escalate a discussion into an argument.

Your comment reminds me of James 1:19, "So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath." I have to remember to bite my tongue and listen so as to keep the peace.

Yes - God's timing may not always be when it is easy to me, but God gives me His strength to obey the Holy Spirit. He knows even when I don't.

That is really neat that you got to see how God used your obedience right away. Sometimes when I obey that still small voice in my heart, I don't know the why. Once I walked into a local grocery store and noticed a poster advertising gift cards for the store. I felt like I was supposed to buy one and give it to someone in the checkout line. But no one was behind me in line. I walked out to my car and prayed, God there was no one to give it to. "Yes, there was." Oh, the cashier. I went back in, bought the card and handed it to her. She was shocked and asked why. I told her that God asked me to, hugged her and left. I have no idea how that small thing made any difference, but I hope it did.

I love how God wanted you to give a card to the cashier. Sometimes we are looking for something more complex and the person God wants us to serve is right in front of us.

Many times I have been prompted to call someone and when I obeyed I have found the person needed encouragement. BTW. I love your honeycomb heading

I love how God knows exactly when someone needs a pick me up and prompts us to call. He is good like that.
